The Origin Story...
I started making my "flights" for a few reasons.
- I love wearing things on my head, but having a large head makes hats less than flattering.
- I hated spending so much for hair accessories that weren't what I was looking for, and that were made so very far away.
- I couldn't find what I was really looking for.
- I had just started taking Burlesque classes and was inspired by the fantastic ladies around me.
- I was extremely bored! What better way to assuage that boredom but piles of feathers and sparkly bits.
So I started making fascinators of every size and shape. I use lots of feathers, vintage jewelry and buttons gleaned from a myriad of family button jars. I look at everything with a deconstructive eye. I've bought kilts to take apart, Christmas ornaments for a feather, a bracelet for a certain sparkly bead, anything is fair game.
Someone asked me, "But where would I wear something like this?", holding a particularly large piece. I replied, "Anywhere you want. Why not create a sense of occasion just for the hell of it."
